AI is a creative tool and it’s so creative that it can be very hard to control. That’s why it is often said that the models hallucinate. There are a large number of methods that can be used in order to direct their creative outcome but it’s generally a tradeoff between the quality and control which should sound familiar to how human artists behave. It’s a brave new world where computer models can be trained by algorithms to have attention and associate text with image details. There is no doubt that these new and highly efficient machine learning models will have a huge impact on almost everything in human societies because they can do so much of the heavy lifting in creative work. Instead of being fearful about all the jobs it will take over, I think we should think about the possibilities it offers for taking creativity to another level where we don’t have to focus so much on details but instead we can focus more on higher levels of abstraction and storytelling.
